How to Prepare Your Grand Piano & Sheet Music Before Moving Them to a New Home

Blog

If you are going to be moving to a new home and are concerned about damage occurring to your grand piano and sheet music, the following tips will help you better prepare your belongings for the moving process.

Collect These Materials

  • piano cleaning agent
  • soft cleaning cloths
  • roll of packing tape (wide)
  • scissors
  • padded foam
  • measuring tape
  • large pieces of plastic wrap
  • folders
  • adhesive labels
  • permanent marker
  • waterproof container (with matching lid)

Clean & Secure Loose Pieces

If the piano seat that you own has a storage compartment underneath it, remove music or any accessories that are inside of it. Apply a cleaning agent that is designed for use on the material that the seat is made out of to a soft cloth and carefully wipe the seats exterior, as well as its legs. Secure the seat's lid with strips of packing tape. You can wrap the section in bubble wrap or cloth if you'd rather not get tape on the seat itself.

Clean the piano's keys with a damp cloth, followed by a dry cloth. Close the piano's lid and secure the edge of it with several strips of tape. If the music holder that run's across the front of the piano is adjustable, secure it to the rest of the piano by taping it down.

Apply a Protective Covering to the Piano & Seat

Use a fresh cloth that has a cleaning agent applied to it to clean the piano's exterior. Secure large pieces of padded foam to the sides, back, and top of the piano with wide strips of tape. Wrap a piece of foam around the piano's pedals before securing it. Cover the seat with one piece of foam and wrap each piano leg and seat leg individually with additional pieces that are cut to size.

Once you are satisfied with the amount of protection that has been added to the piano and seat, cover each piece with a large piece of plastic to help keep the piano and seat protected from moisture.

Organize, Label & Store Sheet Music

Sort all of the sheet music that you own by style or artist. Place corresponding pieces of music in a folder. Secure an adhesive label across the front of each folder and use a permanent marker to list the pieces of music that are stored inside of them. Stack all of the folders inside of a waterproof container that has a matching lid. Tape the edges of the lid to prevent it from accidentally coming loose during the move.

Using Storage During Your Next Move

There are all kinds of reasons to use storage units, but renting one for your next move is absolutely vital for your sanity and your organization. I didn't used to use a storage unit, but about six months ago, I realized that there were some serious problems with the clutter in my home. I started going through and finding things that I didn't need to use right away, and it was amazing to me to see just how much clutter I was hanging onto. Check out this blog for more information about using your storage unit to the best of your ability and knowing how to utilize storage during a relocation.
