Time to Move? 4 Tips to Help You Get the Right Packing Supplies

Blog

It's time to pack up and move. If you're dreading all the work you'll have to do, don't. With some careful planning, you can make your move less difficult than you anticipated. This all comes down to preparation. With the right planning, you can eliminate some of the stress—and work—involved in packing. Starting out with the proper packing supplies can help get you avoid headaches. Here are tips that will help you start with the right supplies.

Invest in Good Boxes

You might think that heading to the local dumpster to find boxes is the right move. Unfortunately, those dumpster boxes might end up adding to your workload. First, they're not going to hold as much weight as you'd expect them to. Second, since they're usually smaller than most packing boxes you can purchase at a supply store, you'll need to use more of them. Save yourself the time and work by purchasing good packing boxes. The sturdy, corrugated cardboard design will allow you to pack more in each box. Plus, the larger size will allow you to use fewer boxes.

Use the Right Packing Tape

Cheap packing tape may save you money per roll, but when it comes to how much tape you'll have to use, you'll actually be spending more money in the long run. Bargain packing tape isn't as strong as heavy-duty packing tape, and that means you'll have to use more tape to keep your boxes secure. Unfortunately, there's still no guarantee that the bargain tape is going to hold your boxes closed. If it doesn't, you could end up with broken boxes and damaged belongings.

Don't Forget the Resealable Baggies

If you've got furniture and electronic equipment to break down for the move, you'll need a safe place to store all the hardware. That's where resealable baggies come in handy. When you break down your furniture and equipment, place the hardware—screws, nuts, and bolts—in the resealable baggies and label the bags with permanent markers. Use duct tape to secure each baggie to a piece of the furniture or equipment. This will ensure that everything stays together during the move.

Bring on the Bubble Wrap

If you've got fragile items, you're going to need plenty of protection. Don't trust newspaper to do the work of quality bubble wrap or foam peanuts. Bubble wrap and foam peanuts will protect your valuables from damage. For maximum protection, wrap all your fragile items in bubble wrap. Once you have those items in a box, fill the spaces with foam peanuts.

If you're moving, make sure you have everything you're going to need to make packing as stress free as possible. Use the list provided here to make sure your packing goes off without a hitch. Talk to a company such as Route 37 Self-Storage to buy supplies.
