3 Tips for a Stress-Free Job Relocation

Blog

Relocating to a new city for a job complicates an already challenging situation. Not only do you have to worry about moving your family and possessions to a new place, but you also have to adapt to working in a new location. To help make the process easier, consider these tips for relocating.

Meet with the Benefits Coordinator

Since you are relocating because of a job, you need to find out what your employer is willing to provide to help make the move easier. Contact your company's benefits coordinator or human-resources department to find out what benefits you are eligible to receive.

For instance, does your employer offer to pay for moving expenses? If so, are there restrictions in place for which moving company you can use? How much is your employer willing to cover?

Ensure that you have all of the offered services in writing and that you fully understand what you need to do to qualify for assistance.

Schedule a Consultation with the Moving Service

There are a few good reasons that you should schedule a consultation with the moving service you plan to use. The most important is that you can receive a professional assessment of which services you will need for moving day.

Moving services can extend beyond packing up your belongings and taking them to the new location. In addition to these services, you might need storage services or even special transport for larger items.

The consultation also gives you a chance to learn what the estimated costs will be for moving. If your employer is helping with the fees, you can use the estimate to give your employer an idea of the funds that will need to be reimbursed to you or paid to the moving company on your behalf.

Prepare for the First Night

By the time you reach your new home, you and your family might not feel up to unpacking on the first night. To ensure that you and your family are not without items you need, pack up a first-night box and place it in your car.

Your box can include everything from hygiene products to a few pots to cook. If you have to be at work the next day, be sure to include the items you need to take with you.

Consult with your moving service to determine whether there are other steps you can take to make your relocation go as smoothly as possible.

Using Storage During Your Next Move

There are all kinds of reasons to use storage units, but renting one for your next move is absolutely vital for your sanity and your organization. I didn't used to use a storage unit, but about six months ago, I realized that there were some serious problems with the clutter in my home. I started going through and finding things that I didn't need to use right away, and it was amazing to me to see just how much clutter I was hanging onto.
