3 Tips for a Stress-free New Year's Move

Blog

A new year is often a time for beginnings. In your case, your new beginning is a new home. A move is typically stressful no matter when it occurs, but a move around the holiday comes along with its own set of challenges. The more knowledgeable you are of the road ahead, the better equipped you'll feel. Make sure you know how to prepare and successfully conquer a New Year's move.

Pack Early & Often

If you're performing a self-packing move, pack as much as you can as early as you can. Between holiday celebrations, gift shopping, visits with family and friends and in your case, farewell parties—your schedule will be quite busy.

The last thing you want to do is find yourself recovering from the holiday and packing at the same time. Create a plan of action that lists everything you need to do, all the way down to emptying the condiment drawer in the kitchen. Transfer these tasks to a calendar that allows you to chip away at several items on the list each day.

Leave a "Home" Room

If you're a family with small children, the holidays represent a very special time of the year. Although you're busy packing away preparing for your move, try hard to keep a "home" room. A home room is basically a small space that feels like home amidst all the chaos of moving.

For example, you could leave the family room intact and even add holiday decorations. This gives the entire family a place to gather and celebrate that still feels warm and cozy and not like a den of boxes and moving tape. From pictures to memories, this effort will be much appreciated.

Be Flexible

If the plan is to literally move at the start of the year, make sure you're leaving some room for flexibility. All moving services have different dates of operation around the holiday season. If you have a rigid timeline, it might make more sense for you to have your home packed up before the holiday and then have your goods transported after the fact.

Not only does this make more sense time-wise, it also allows you to enjoy the holiday and your loved ones with ease, knowing the hard part is over.

There is no right or wrong time to move, only a right and a wrong way to go about the process. Plan early for a stress-free holiday move. For more help or information, contact companies like Affordable Transfer Co Inc.

Using Storage During Your Next Move

There are all kinds of reasons to use storage units, but renting one for your next move is absolutely vital for your sanity and your organization. I didn't used to use a storage unit, but about six months ago, I realized that there were some serious problems with the clutter in my home. I started going through and finding things that I didn't need to use right away, and it was amazing to me to see just how much clutter I was hanging onto. Check out this blog for more information about using your storage unit to the best of your ability and knowing how to utilize storage during a relocation.
