One of the most challenging pieces of furniture to move is your dining room set. Often, these are made of fine wood so you don't want to chance any scratches or nicks, but the odd shape of the pieces can make them difficult to fit into a moving truck without a few bumps and bangs. The following tips can help you avoid damage so your dining set arrives at your new home in top condition.
Tip #1: Remove the legs
The main thing that makes a table awkward to maneuver, which increases the chances of damage, is the legs. Take a few minutes to figure out how the legs are attached – it's usually just a bolt or two per leg or for a pedestal assembly. Most tabletops can easily be carried by two people when you don't have legs to work around.
Tip #2: Take out the leaves
Leaves just add weight to the tabletop, which makes it harder to move without mishap. Remove any leaves before moving. For drop leaf tables, it is often easier to move them with the leaves locked into the open position so the tabletop is flat, unless the style of drop leaves allows you to fold them down flush to the main tabletop once the legs are removed.
Tip #3: Wrap carefully
Wrapping is key to preventing scratches. Some sort of padded wrapper is best for the tabletop, legs, and leaves, such as bubble wrap or a moving blanket. Wrap the wood pieces completely and then secure the wrapping in place with tape or rope. If you use tape, make sure it doesn't come in direct contact with the wood.
Tip #4: Perfect the chair stack
Most chairs don't come apart easily, but they are generally lightweight. The issue with the chairs is that they fit awkwardly in the moving truck. You can counteract this by stacking one chair on top of the other – the bottom one right side up and the top one upside down to create a chair tower. Then, grab a roll of packing wrap, which resembles plastic food wrap, and wrap it around the chair tower so they are protected from scratches and temporarily held together. This makes it easy to carry two chairs, and it also prevents the chairs from being knocked around too badly in the truck.
Tip #5: Know how to load
The final piece of the moving puzzle is loading everything. The tabletop should be placed on end against a wall. A good place for it is to slide it between the mattress and box spring, which are also placed on their side inside the truck. Place chair towers upright and don't stack anything on top of them. You can place them on top of other items, though, as long as everything is secured well with ropes.
